It’s been a long time since I found such a good series that feels as nostalgic as ‘La primera vez’ (in English, ‘The First Time’). Set in the 70s in Colombia, the series revolves around Eva Samper, who is the first girl ever to attend a all-boys school. There, she befriends Camilo Granados and his akward friends. What makes Eva special is her extensive knowledge of relationships, literature, and politics. This often leaves the boys at her school perplexed.
What I love about the series:
- In every episode, Eva introduces a literary work, which she always uses to teach the boys a lesson. So, you won’t be only learning Spanish, but also about universal literature!
- The series is a great source of Colombian idiomatic expressions
#2. Clanes (Gangs of Galicia)
Surely this thriller will captivate you! Set in Galicia, it tells the true story of Ana, a lawyer who moves to the north of Spain after discovering her father’s secret involvement with drug cartels.
Clanes has been one of the most watched and acclaimed series of 2024. I just hope there is a second season!

If you enjoyed La Casa de Papel (Money Heist), you can’t miss Berlín, the spin-off of the acclaimed Spanish series!
Set in Paris, the series revolves around Berlín’s plan to seize a cache of jewels belonging to European royalty. It was released in December 2023 and, we have good news for you: There’s a second season coming!
#4. La flor más bella
Of course, we couldn’t skip a good teen series! This adventure takes us to Xochimilco High School, in Mexico, where Mich (tired of being invisible to everyone) commits all kinds of crazy acts to try to convince her classmates, and the world, of what she is capable of.
What I love about the series:
- It’s great to get used to Mexican accent and dialect, as well as teenagers’ expressions
- You will learn about the importance of Mexican identity in our globalised world
#5. Merlí: Sapere aude
Merlí: Sapere aude is the sequel of Merlí, released by the Catalan channel TV3. Even if you haven’t watched the first two seasons, you can easily follow its sequel. This time, the series follows an 18-year-old Pol Rubio, and what his life is like now at the faculty of philosophy where he studies.
What I love about the series:
- The characters speak both Spanish and Catalan. This will make you more aware of other regional and language identities from Spain.
- The series teaches us how philosophy can apply to our daily lives
#6. La Liga: All Access
If you love football, this series is for you. In this docuseries, you will closely follow the journey of Spanish football clubs and their iconic stories. Plus, you will get an inside look at how players and fans experience the country’s major derbies and, of course, El Clásico (Real Madrid VS Fútbol Club Barcelona).
